Stoicism...Hi Corine, many thanks for your comments. Stoicism is not in favour of doing nothing in the face of injustice - so we should show courage in doing what we can to create a just society. What Stoics think we should avoid is trying to change things we can't change. So what we need is wisdom to tell the difference between what we can and can't change. This is pithily summed up in the Serenity Prayer. The question here is - what does wisdom tell us we can change, and how should we change it? We cant directly change what Cameron does today, we certainly cant change what he did months ago. We can and should do what is just. Cato the Younger is an example of a real-life historical Stoic who was very involved in political action - in his case, opposing Julius Caesar's (ultimately successful) attempt to become dictator of the Roman Empire.Tim LeBonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04060569828784996629noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24395050.post-68384838958531063542016-07-05T13:42:58.663+00:002016-07-05T13:42:58.663+00:00Very helpful Tim but the statement "we cannot...Very helpful Tim but the statement "we cannot help what Cameron does" makes me a bit uncomfortable. Surely we live in a democracy and we SHOULD do something when people that are meant to represent us turn out to be totally corrupt and self-interested? (I am referring to the people who advocated Leave and clearly didn't want Leave to win and, furthermore, immediately and cowardly left).<br />Anger is, as you say, useless, but would Stoics really believe that we should change "our thoughts" in the face of corrupt politics? Would they not believe we should do something about corruption? (Not that I know what to do). The too-thin line between being stoical and letting evil win has always bothered me, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. However, my concern as an American is that the UK is headed in the wrong direction which is splintering into smaller and smaller groups rather than unifying realizing the rights and brotherhood of man. The UK following this reactionary trend will give a warrant to every crazy group in the world to assert their "individuality". The UK should be a leader in progress rather than a backwards looking force.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01986906459023637908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24395050.post-60495675473554903552015-12-18T16:54:08.206+00:002015-12-18T16:54:08.206+00:00Its very informative, thanks for sharing such beni...Its very informative, thanks for sharing such benifitent and full of knowledge passages.Mani Dgkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09178150616796165918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24395050.post-57516415588514577622012-09-30T08:58:25.233+00:002012-09-30T08:58:25.233+00:00What a good question!

Should you not be doing something else?' That was the start of the thought processes that led to my business start-up and success, and I told him so when I interviewed him five years later. I've never seen a happier person in an interview since saying that! He was delighted, it verified all his theories. His bike accident was not a great surprise, he was talking about a knee operation when we met and clearly loved to be active. This provides a good balance to positive psychology's advice to "use your strengths". For example, suppose you know that a weakness is that you don't really listen to people. Managing this might include telling people that this is something you are working on, and being in roles which dont require too much listeningTim LeBonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04060569828784996629noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24395050.post-90801338114257543032008-06-23T17:02:00.000+00:002008-06-23T17:02:00.000+00:00Oops - of course - there's the link in the very ne...Oops - of course - there's the link in the very next (err ... previous) posting.
